An unprecedented avian flu epidemic in the US between February 2022 and January 2025 caused a massive reduction in the egg supply, leading to soaring egg prices ("eggflation"). While prices have since fallen to a five-month low by mid-March, illegal egg seizures from Mexico and Canada have surged due to import restrictions aimed at preventing disease spread, exceeding even fentanyl seizures in October.
